Rapidly increasing registration of geographic indication

The Trademark Office of the Administrative General for Industry and Commerce published the number of registrations and applications for geographic indication (GI) by the end of December 2009, which is 771 in total.
The total number of applications in the past 2 years is 470, which is 1.5 times the total number of applications of the past 14 years. Such a rapid increase is a reflection of achieving the purpose of enriching farmers in the agriculture policy of the PRC.
Among the 666 approved registrations, 635 pieces were from China. Of the foreign registrations, Italy had the most, with 11 pieces about PARMA HAM; there were also 7 pieces about IDAHO POTATO of the USA, 5 pieces about THAI SILK of Thailand, 3 pieces about SCOTCH WHISKY of the UK, 2 pieces about TEQUILA of Mexico, 2 pieces about JAMAICA BLUE MOUNTAIN of JAMAICA and 1 piece about SOLINGEN of Germany.
105 applications were published after the completion of the preliminary examination, of which 103 pieces from China. The foreign applications included two pieces about NAPA VALLEY NV of the USA and池上米 of Taiwan. It is an optional means to respond the problems encountered by the local goods of foreign countries in China by applying and registering for GI.
