The Number of Patent Applications in China increased 18% (970,000 applications) in 2009

According to the data provided by the SIPO, the number of patent applications accepted in 2009 was 976,686, which was a 17.9% increase over the previous year. The number of domestic applications was 977,611, which signified a 22.4% increase compared with the previous year. The specific numbers of applications are shown in the following graph, in which the rate of increase is 17.7% for invention patents, 37.9% for utility model patents, and 13.7% for design patents.
Due to the influence of the World Financial Crisis, there were only 99,075 foreign applications, which is a slight decrease (10.9%) compared with the 111,184 applications in 2008. Particularly there was a significant decrease in inventions (0.3% from 2008) and designs (18.2% from 2008). The number of utility model patents was small but increased 16.4% compared with 1641 applications last year. The major countries submitting foreign applications include Japan, the USA, Germany and Korea, of which there was a 10% decrease from Japan, a 10.9% decrease from USA, a 4.4% decrease from Germany and a 23.7% decrease from Korea compared with the number of last year; the applications from Korea decreased significantly. Analyzing the data shows that the rate of utility model patent applications from the USA and design applications from Korea is increasing.. The number of applications from Germany remains roughly the same.
In view of the business development of China and the cost of application, utility model patents are useful for short-life products and defending against copycats. Trend of patent applications from major countries
The trend of the number of patent applications from Japan in the past 3 years is shown in the following chart. Although the number of annual applications is increasing, there was a significant decrease in the last year, when the total number decreased to 35,000. Notably, there were 29,851 invention patent applications, which was a decrease of 17.1% compared with the 36036 in the previous year. The number of design applications was 3,651, which was a decrease of 29.5% compared with 5,181 in the previous year.
According to the increasing number of granted patents, the speed of examination is increasing, and the number of granted patents in the future will increase continuously. The accumulated total number of registrations has exceeded 3 million. Number of Granted Patent Application in 2009
